Public Works Associate (DPW)

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance, repairs, and operation associated with Town-owned roads and highways and associated rights of way, bridges, culverts, and sidewalks, along with the operation associated with the maintenance, repair, improvement, and cleaning of Town buildings, grounds and parks.  The successful candidate must have considerable knowledge on the principles and practices of public works management; technical and practical knowledge of the materials methods and techniques relative to public works projects and issues is necessary.  The ability to communicate effectively with contractors, vendors, employees, and departments, as well as the general public.  They must have a strong work ethic and work history, along with a versatile skill set and a “can-do” attitude.   A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required. 

Essential Job Function:

  • Assist in the maintenance of town owned buildings.
  • Assist in road resurfacing projects, such as drainage and bridge construction.Remove snow and ice from Town owned highways, roads, sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Assist in the care of Town parks, grounds and tree maintenance.
  • Respond to emergencies in Town buildings and on Town roadways, including holidays, weekends and nights, as necessary.Work cooperatively with Department of Public Works Employees and other departments to ensure the efficient and effective operation of Town government.
  • Adhere to Town policies adopted by the Selectboard and Town Manager.
  • Perform other related work assigned by the Department of Public Works Director.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
  • Ability to operate equipment, such as lawn mowers, trimmers, chain saws, and heavy equipment.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb, kneel, stoop and bend.
  • Regularly required to lift up to 50 pounds, frequently required to lift up to 100 pounds, and occasionally required to lift over 100 pounds with assistance
  • Walking on uneven surfaces may be required.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision for inspection and repair work, as well as distance vision for evaluating objects at afar.
  • Physical labor is performed in every type of weather condition, including extremely adverse weather conditions, extreme hot and severe cold weather.
  • Duties require evening, night, weekend and holiday work; may require occasional response to facility- or road-related emergencies.
  • Position works 40 hours per week – generally Monday through Friday, 6:00 .m. to 2:30 p.m. with 30 minutes for lunch.
